Description
The Rachel Fowler Centre, originally a Congregational Church, is a community centre built in 1773. It features an ashlar front with rubblestone sides and rear, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has coped verges, kneelers, and finials. The building is two stories high and has a three-window gable-end front. A projecting flat-roofed porch includes a central segmental-arched doorway with double eight-fielded panelled doors and a classical surround with a pediment. On either side of the porch are small 12-pane sash windows. Above the porch, there are three round-arched windows, with the centre window being taller and featuring Y-tracery and leaded glass. The right and left returns have square-headed two and three-light hollow-chamfered mullioned windows on the first floor, along with four round-arched windows with Y-tracery. To the right of the right return is a 20th-century gabled extension with an entrance. Inside, the centre has a gallery on all four sides supported by cast-iron columns, with decorated wrought iron balconies. The pews are located only on the galleries, as those on the ground floor have been removed.
