Description

The building at 31 Market Place is a fire brigade headquarters, now offices, with a detached garage to the rear, built in 1847. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof, incorporating coped verges and ashlar stacks topped with moulded caps. The building is two storeys high and has six windows facing the Market Place. The symmetrical front elevation is divided by four pilasters. The central bay features a tall, round-arched opening containing a six-panelled beaded door and a fanlight. Flanking this are two more tall, round-arched openings with impost mouldings, which contain eight-pane sash windows; the imposts form a string course. The first floor has two tall, round-arched sash windows in each of the three bays. Further features include a plain frieze, cornice and a blocking course. A wide ashlar round arch with imposts connects the building to the left to No 31 Town Hall, providing access to the garage behind, and has double doors within a semi-elliptical arched opening. The rear features a two-storey ashlar wing with sixteen-pane sash windows. The building holds group value with the Town Hall.
