Description

Nos 2 and 3 on Place Road are a pair of attached houses built around 1864. They are constructed of ashlar stone and feature diamond quoins, with a Welsh slate roof that has coped verges and ashlar stacks. The houses are designed in an H-plan and consist of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a total of four windows.

The entrance doors are located on the left and right returns of the building. These doors have round arched panels and are set within moulded stone cases, topped with a Perpendicular style arched head over a fanlight and a pediment that features fine vine carving. To the left, there is a pair of sash windows with chamfered cases and pointed hood moulds above Perpendicular arched openings. The first floor has a pair of sash windows to the left and a single sash window to the right, all within Perpendicular arched openings. The stack is adorned with chamfered shoulders and dog-tooth ornament.

The front of the houses has flanking wings with Dutch gables that display ballflower ornamentation. There are two-storey canted bays featuring trefoil arches on the panels below the sashes, which also have Perpendicular arched openings and hood moulds. The frieze on the first floor includes trefoils, and the sashes here do not have hood moulds. The parapet is decorated with pierced roundels, and the attic sash has a pointed arch above it with a trefoil in the tympanum and polychrome tiles. The central windows are paired sashes that match the detail found in the bays. The rear of the building has plain projecting ashlar wings. The interior has not been inspected. Place Road was established in 1864 following the demolition of Place House, and these houses are a carefully designed unit that retains all of their original external features.
