Description

The Town Hall, originally a cheese market, was built in 1847 by D. Jones of Bradford-on-Avon. It features ashlar stonework and a hipped Welsh slate roof. The building is square and has two storeys with a symmetrical front that is divided by four wide pilasters. The central round-arched opening has imposts and a recessed door accessed by steps, with round-arched openings on either side that contain Diocletian sash windows with margin lights. A string course runs along the building, and there are two tall semi-circular headed sashes with margin lights and imposts in each of the three first-floor bays. The plain frieze and moulded cornice lead to a blocking course topped with a pediment over the central bay, which features a clock and a stone bellcote at the apex.

The left side of the building has two round-arched openings with Diocletian sash windows with margin lights and one blind arch on either side. A plat band runs along this side. The rear of the building mirrors the front with round arches containing sashes on the ground floor and a plat band on the first floor, featuring two tall semi-circular headed sashes flanking a central round-arched window. Inside, there are well-crafted moulded doorcases, a central staircase, and the ground floor committee room showcases fine oak panelling, a carved door case, and a frieze adorned with palmettes.
