Description

The Tontine Shops, originally a butchers' market, was built in 1837 and remodelled between 1989 and 1991. It features ashlar stonework and a hipped roof made of Welsh slate. The building has a square plan, with shops arranged around a central atrium, and is designed in a late classical style. The front and sides are single storey, while the rear is mainly two storeys.

The facade presents a symmetrical design with a central entrance and a clock tower above, connected to pedimented wings by unfluted Doric column screens that now include glazing. The central entrance showcases chanelled rustication and a round-arched head, and it projects forward. Above the entablature, there is an octagonal clock tower topped with a leaded dome. The entablature extends over the screens and wings, which feature paired Doric half columns flanking a moulded stone doorcase with a pediment supported by consoles. The entrance has double doors and overlights with decorative glazing.

The sides of the mall are simpler but include a central entrance similar to the facade, with pilasters at intervals and a continuous entablature. The right side has a single two-storey bay towards the rear, featuring paired sash windows. The rear of the building is divided into two sections; the right section is angled and includes a central aedicule in recent stonework that frames a doorcase resembling those on the facade. Flanking the aedicule are two windows with moulded stone architraves, along with smaller windows above that also have decorative glazing. The other section of the rear has large glazed openings on the ground floor, with additional doors and windows to the left. The first floor features single or paired sash windows and three gables. The interior was updated in the late 20th century.
