Description
The Post Office in Hanley, Stoke on Trent, was built in 1906 by John Rutherford. It features an ashlar-faced design with two storeys and an attic, presenting a facade of 11 bays arranged in a 1-3-3-3-1 pattern, with the outer bays projecting. The central pediment is supported by paired Doric shafts and displays a coat of arms at the apex. The basement storey includes a central round-arched entry beneath a stone canopy, flanked by round-arched windows. Above this, there is a continuous band of six small windows in the central attic storey, separated by shafts that act as mullions. The doorways are set in moulded stone architraves, with sash windows on each side, and the outer bays feature round-arched doors with pedimented windows above. These advanced outer bays also have segmental pediments. A heavy entablature runs throughout the building.
