Description

Alexander House and the Bethesda School Rooms is a former Methodist School built in 1819 and enlarged in 1836. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and a plain tiled roof. It is two stories high with a façade of 12 bays facing the churchyard. The central section is slightly advanced and includes a pedimented gable supported by giant pilasters, topped with an octagonal lantern. The pilasters also define the building's corners. The windows are sash style, featuring margin lights and flat arched stuccoed heads with prominent keystones. The upper windows in the central section have entablatures supported by console brackets. The street-facing pedimented gable includes a blind central doorway with an entablature and flanking sash windows with margin lights. There is also a blind central upper window with an entablature. The pediment is inscribed with "Bethesda School. Erected MDCCCXIX enlarged MDCCCXXXVI". Alexander House, which forms the south wing, was added to the rear of the central gable and matches the north wing. It features a round-arched doorway with margin lights below and tripartite upper windows. The property is complemented by cast-iron railings with domed caps along Bethesda Street.
