Description

The Town Hall is an early 19th-century building of ashlar construction, with a rusticated ground floor. It has a hipped slate roof, a cornice, and a tall, moulded parapet wall, with an extra course to the east. The building is nearly square, and has two storeys. Corner piers of ashlar form the ground floor, rising to coupled pilasters on the first floor. The facade facing Salter Street has three 24-pane sash windows in recessed reveals. The ground floor of this facade features three large segmental-headed arches, each with elaborately glazed windows, and a recessed door with six bolection-moulded panels, set within a stained-glass surround. The eastern facade, facing the Market Place, has a round-headed window on the first floor and a large segmental arch on the ground floor, incorporating a clock within an elaborate glazing bar design.
