Description
This is a mid- to late 19th-century bank with apartments above, and it is believed to have been a refronting of an 18th-century women’s prison. The building is constructed of ashlar in two colours, with lighter-coloured quoins and dressings, and sits on a stone plinth. It has a tile roof with fish scale layers and ashlar end stacks with short twin polygonal flues. The building comprises a single front range and a rear extension, extending to two storeys and an attic.
The front of the building has two steep pointed gables with decorative bargeboards, framing a smaller central Dutch gable with a ball finial and applied shield. The front elevation has three bays with three-light stone mullion windows flanking two single lights in the centre. The ground floor features two four-light stone mullion and transom windows flanking a central, straight-headed doorway set into a large, four-centred chamfered arch. Single small, latticed windows are located in the gables. The building contributes significantly to the group value of the area, particularly in relation to the Town Hall and Salter Street.
