Description
Nos 6 and 8 High Street is a former coaching inn, now used as shops and workshops. It dates from the early to mid-18th century, with a single bay added to the left at a slightly later date. The building is constructed of brick on a stone plinth for the original block, featuring a double Roman tile roof with a wooden eaves fascia and brick string courses on the original block. It has three brick stacks and stands three storeys high.
The main front range has long rear extensions on both sides that include outhouses and workshops. The façade has four windows, which are 12-pane sashes with moulded wood architraves and painted splayed brick voussoirs on the first and ground floors of the original block. There is a bow window on the first floor in the left-hand bay, and the ground floor has replacement 19th-century sashes throughout. A large carriage arch is located left of centre, featuring moulded wood jambs and a lintel, and likely original timber doors. At the rear of the original block, there is a two-storey bow extension with curved glass windows.
