Description

16 and 18 High Street is a small house located in a terrace, dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features incised render on the plinth, a concrete tile roof, and a brick end stack on the left. It has a single front range with a later rear range that forms an L-shape on the right. The house is two storeys high and includes attic skylights. The fenestration is scattered, primarily consisting of three bays with 2 and 3-light casements that are likely from the 19th century.

On the ground floor, from the left, there is a former throughway of double door width with a large chamfered beam on corbels inside the arch. This is followed by a wide door made of four fielded and two flush panels, and then two 20th-century plate glass window insertions. The interior boasts a fine medieval roof structure featuring cambered tie beams, two small struts to the collar beam, and arched windbracing on the west side in pairs between trusses, along with arched braces supporting some tie beams. There is also an original wattle and daub partition and a plank door. One ground floor room contains a blind moulded stone pointed arch set in a thick rubble wall, which is reputed to be part of the original castle wall.
