Description

This barn, located immediately to the south-west of Yalberton Farmhouse, likely dates from the late 18th century and has undergone extensive patching and remodelling. It is constructed partly of cob on stone rubble footings and partly of stone rubble, with a corrugated-iron roof that was formerly thatched. The barn is oriented north to south and is built down a slope, adjoining the farmhouse at a right angle. The eastern elevation, which faces the farmyard and is now the rear of the farmhouse, features a long front with three windows. There are a pair of barn doors in the center, a loft loading door to the right, and a 12-pane sash window to the left, which likely originated from the farmhouse. The left end of the barn has more cob, a small doorway, and one ground and one loft window, all with timber lintels. The entrance from the lane to the north, located under one room of the house, is at loft level inside the barn. The interior has been partially inspected and reveals pegged collar rafter roof trusses characteristic of the late 18th century. The barn has group value with the nearby vernacular farmhouse.
