Description
The west, east, and north ranges of farm buildings at Lower Yalberton Farm date from around the 1830s and are contemporary with the farmhouse. Constructed from local grey limestone rubble, they feature gabled slate roofs and form part of a planned farmyard.
The west range serves as a lofted shippon, while the north range, which faces the road, includes a shippon that opens to the yard and has a loft above with access from Long Road. The east range separates the lower and higher yards, containing a shippon on the lower side that faces west. The loft above this shippon is at the level of the upper yard and was used as a threshing barn, with a horse-engine house located on the north side. Fodder that was threshed and stored in the east and north ranges could be moved down into the yard from the upper levels.
The exterior of the west range features four segmental-headed shippon entrances with slatted doors and a single loft doorway flanked by ventilation slits. The north range has six similar doorways leading to the yard and Long Road at loft level. The east range includes four shippon entrances facing the yard, one loft door, and ventilation slits. The right return has a doorway, and the rear elevation facing the higher yard has a segmental-headed threshing doorway with paired doors and a smaller doorway alongside. At the end of Long Road, there is a horse-engine house with a canted end adjoining the range.
The interior has only been partially inspected. The west range features scissor bracing to the loft joists, while the north range has a king post and strut roof.
