Description
This linhay and boundary wall are located approximately 28 metres south-east of Lanscombe Farm Cottages in Torquay. They date from the mid to late 19th century and are constructed from red sandstone rubble with red brick dressings, featuring a gable-ended design and a Roman tile roof. The linhay is built down the hillslope, facing north-west towards the farmyard. The uphill end has a ramp leading to a hayloft loading hatch, while the ground floor is open to the yard.
The exterior consists of two storeys with a four-bay front that includes an open cowshed to the yard, supported by a timber lintel on brick piers with stone pillows. The hayloft features large slit ventilators. The right end has a ramp with stone parapet walls leading to a large loading hatch doorway, which has a segmental arch head and a louvred oculus above. The left end has a smaller loading hatch under a similar oculus facing the lane.
Inside, the linhay has plain carpentry details, including a roof supported by tie beam trusses with queen struts. The boundary wall on the north-east side of the farmyard is made of stone rubble and screens the yard from the lane, curving into the yard for the gateway. This attractive linhay, along with the other buildings in the farmyard, contributes to a notably appealing group of listed buildings in the unspoilt village and the adjacent Cockington Park.
