Linhay At About 2 Metres West Of Higher North Coombe Farmhouse

This is a linhay, a type of agricultural building, dating from the 18th century, located about 2 meters west of Higher North Coombe Farmhouse in Stockleigh Pomeroy. The structure is built from stone rubble and cob, with some parts rendered, and it has a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched. The roof is hipped to the left (west) and features a brick chimney over the gable end of a wash house conversion on the right.

The linhay is a long rectangular building consisting of 9 bays. The end bays are enclosed by solid walls, while the central section is open to the south. It has two storeys, with a loft that utilizes part of the roof space. The left bay of the south wall has unpierced stone walling up to the loft floor level, while the right bay features a central doorway with a wooden lintel above it. The central section, which has 7 bays, is open and supported by 7 original posts.

Inside, the complete timber structure remains intact in the open section, with cross beams that are morticed and side pegged into the posts. The original trusses are jointed and pegged to the front posts and rest on the solid unpierced walling at the rear, with lapped and pegged collars.
