Description
This linhay, located about 45 metres northwest of Pinbrook House, dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a 20th-century addition on the south side. It features a framed construction topped with a corrugated iron roof, which has replaced the original thatch. The linhay consists of six bays that are open-fronted on both sides. The westernmost bay is narrower than the others, and the easternmost bay has been truncated. Some bays have been divided by modern concrete block divisions, but these changes have not significantly affected the original structure. The open front on the southwest side allowed cattle access to the stream.
On the exterior, the posts on the northeast side rest on Heavitree stone pads, while the pads on the southwest side have been replaced with concrete. Inside, the loft tie beams are chamfered with run-out stops, and most of the original joists and wide oak floorboards in the loft remain intact. However, the loft floor has been removed in the third bay from the left. The roof features A-frame trusses, each with an X-apex and a diagonally set ridge. The principal rafters are slotted into the tops of the posts and secured with pegs. The slightly cambered collars are lap-jointed to the principals and fixed with pegs and nails. The purlins rest on the backs of the principal rafters and are held in place by wedges. The original rafters are intact throughout, attached to the ridge with long projecting pegs. This linhay is notable as an unusual example of a type of agricultural building that is specific to the southwest of England.
