Description
54 and 56 Teignmouth Road is a detached villa that has been divided into two houses, built in the late 1840s or early 1850s. It is part of a development of nine villas located on the north-west side of the road. The building is plastered and features a slate hipped roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts and projecting cornices.
The villa has a rectangular double-depth plan, originally with the entrance on the right side. The centre window on the front has been converted into a door for No. 54. The exterior is two storeys high, with deep eaves supported by paired brackets, an eaves band, a platband, and rusticated quoins. The front was originally symmetrical with three windows. The ground-floor windows are 6 over 9-pane sashes with moulded architraves, while the first-floor windows have moulded architraves and sill blocks, but have been reglazed with 2-pane sashes. There is a verandah across the front supported by trellis standards.
The interior has not been inspected but may still have interesting features.
