Description
The wall enclosing the garden, located immediately to the east of Lyegrove House, features two gates and gate piers in the north wall, as well as gate piers in the west wall. The gate piers in the west wall date back to the 17th century, while the walled garden is likely from the 19th century. The gates in the north wall were designed in 1927 by G. H. Kitchin.
The walled garden is constructed of coursed rubble, with a brick lining on the garden side. The north wall includes two gates: a large central gate designed by G. H. Kitchin, which has a round-headed opening framed by an ashlar pediment supported by pilasters. This gate is flanked by giant pilasters topped with ball finials and features a cast-iron gate. There is also a smaller gate to the west, with piers that have ball finials.
The gate piers in the west wall are made of ashlar and include shell head niches on both the front and rear, along with a cornice and large ball finials. These were brought to Lyegrove in the 19th century, likely from Little Sodbury Manor.
