Description

Grickstone Farm barn, located to the southeast of the farmhouse, dates from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled roof made of stone slate, pantile, and corrugated asbestos. The barn has a 10-bay plan with a threshing floor positioned to the east of the center. There is a gabled midstrey attached to an outshut on the north elevation, as well as a later 18th or 19th-century gabled midstrey that connects to a mid-19th-century engine house with a brick stack on the south elevation. An owl hole is present in the west gable. Inside, the barn has a 10-bay collar truss roof with tapered butt purlins and a diagonally-set ridge to the plated yoke; three of the trusses on the west side were replaced in the early 19th century. This barn is noted as a good example of a large 18th-century barn for the region.
