Description

The gatehouse and flanking walls to Leyhill were built around 1850 by architect S.S. Teulon. They are constructed from coursed rubble with Bath stone dressings and feature flat roofs that are hidden behind embattled and pierced parapets. The central entrance has a 4-centred arch with decorative spandrels and is flanked by buttresses. The parapet above is pierced with letters that spell "WELCOME" and is bordered by octagonal ashlar turrets, each topped with crested parapets and an ogee dome with a finial. On either side of the arch, there are two single-storey rooms, each with a 2-light casement window and an embattled parapet. The walls extend approximately 15 yards to the south, then return 10 yards to the west and 20 yards to the north, featuring pierced quatrefoil balustrades on ashlar footings.
