Description
The wall letter box, designed in 1857 by Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham, is set into the boundary wall of 1 and 2 Post Office Cottages. The boundary wall itself is of lesser interest.
This letter box is made of cast iron and painted red. It features a standardized design with a moulded and panelled front. At the top, there is a horizontal opening with the words "POST OFFICE" above and "LETTER BOX" below. The original inward-opening flap has been removed. Below this, the panel displays the Royal Cypher of Queen Victoria along with the words "CLEARED AT," and a modern collection plate has been bolted beneath. The central panel serves as the door, while the bottom panel is solid.
