Description
Marsten is an estate cottage dated 1854, possibly designed by S.S. Teulon for the Earl of Ducie's estate. It is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, topped with a plain tiled roof featuring coped raised verges and brick stacks. The building showcases a picturesque Tudor Gothic style and has a T-plan layout with an off-centre gabled projecting porch and stairtower.
The northwest elevation consists of two bays. The left bay features a slightly projecting bay window with a two-light cross window, and above it, there is a single light casement window with a 4-centred head. To the right, a gabled projecting wing contains a plank door on the ground floor, which has a 4-centred head with enriched spandrels and arms, along with a single light window with a cusped head. On the first floor, there is an oriel window with a corbelled base and a window that also has a 4-centred head.
The northeast gable includes an oriel window that is triangular in plan, along with two single light casement windows on the ground floor. At the rear of the building, there is an attached single-storey kitchen.
