Description
Wandsworth Prison Gatehouse was built between 1849 and 1851 by D R Hill. It features a three-bay design with Cyclopean detailing, including a low arched entrance bay that is flanked by twin, three-storey towers. The gatehouse is constructed from pale gault bricks with stone dressings.
The round-headed arch of the entrance has a triple-stepped architrave that is interrupted by a vermiculated keystone and voussoirs. It is flanked by rusticated pylons that rise to a cornice and blocking course, with the cornice being modillioned above the arch. The windows in the towers are also round-headed, with architraves that include impost blocks and keystones. Each tower culminates in a modillion cornice and blocking course. The pylons that flank the central bay are echoed at the outer angles of the towers.
