Description

The gatehouse and walling at Baynards Park, built around 1840, were constructed by the Rev. Thomas Thurlow, possibly with the help of architects Charles Rickman or Benjamin Ferrey. The structure features brown and grey/blue brick, with some decorative diapering on the first floor, stone angle quoins, and a Horsham slab roof. The gatehouse serves as the entrance to the southwest corner of the courtyard, with a wall extending north to an angle turret and returning east to another entrance. The wall is approximately 8 feet high, with a moulded brick stringcourse halfway up and battlements along the top.

The gatehouse itself is two storeys tall, with offset end ridge stacks and a stringcourse at the top of the plinth and over the ground floor. It has octagonal stone 'drums' at the ends of the roof kneelers. A battlemented oriel window, supported by a moulded corbel, is located on the first floor to the left of centre, featuring two arched lights on the front and single arched lights on the sides, all with diamond-pane leaded casements. An armorial crest is situated below the centre light. To the right, there is a two arched-light leaded window on the first floor and a three arched-light window on the ground floor, which is located under a label moulding. The ground floor also includes a 4-centred arched carriageway to the left.

To the left of the gatehouse, there is a lower projecting range with a curved angle supported by a squinch, and two square quatrefoil windows near the eaves. A door is positioned to the left behind the courtyard wall. At the rear, the turret features stone chequerwork decoration and an oriel window on the first floor, with two 3-light windows below. The side rooms in the gatehouse passage have doors equipped with 19th-century locks and fittings.
