North West Gateway To Baynards Park

The North West Gateway to Baynards Park, built around 1850-1860, features red and blue brick walls arranged in alternating bands, topped with stone capitals and brick tile coping. The gateway includes wrought iron gates flanked by two square piers, which are approximately 10 feet high and sit on moulded plinths. These piers have moulded stone caps topped with spherical finials. The double gates have a concave elliptical top adorned with rose and scroll gilt work, and each gate displays an oval roundel featuring a thistle. The flanking walls are about six feet high and incorporate stone-dressed, four-centre arched pedestrian gateways, each with a planked door and grilles in the upper half. Shorter square piers with spherical finials mark the ends of the walls, and a section of the return wall on the left is buttressed as it steps down the hillside. The nearby mansion, which has since been burnt down, was located in Ewhurst.
