Description

ST 69 SE TORTWORTH TORTWORTH PARK

1/139 Retaining Wall and Steps, 15 yards south of Leyhill G.V. II

Retaining wall to a terrace and flanking flights of steps. Circa 1850 by S.S. Teulon. Coursed rubble retaining wall approximately 6 feet high, with ashlar saddleback coping. Buttresses at intervals with squat ashlar uprights supporting ball finials. Flight of 9 steps and flanking walls at either end of the wall which extends the whole length of the terrace immediately south of Leyhill. At the east end the wall has a pierced quatrefoil parapet, as it returns northwards to the gatehouse wall. (The Builder, 19.10.1853 and 10.ll.1853).
