Description

The retaining walls, steps, and terrace located to the south and west of Ashwicke Hall were constructed between 1857 and 1860 by J.K. Colling. Made of ashlar, the retaining wall features a saddleback design on a plinth with a roll-moulded ridge and stands approximately 5 feet high. There are circular bastions at the south-east and south-west corners. In the center of the south range, there is a flight of 12 steps flanked by two squat ashlar piers that have a band of fleurons as a cornice and crested caps. A similar flight of steps is found on the west side, along with similar piers at the south-east corner of the house where the wall returns as a quadrant.
