Description

This is a field barn dating from the mid-19th century, built for the Ashwicke Hall estate. It is constructed of limestone rubble with freestone dressings. The roof has been re-covered with corrugated asbestos sheets. The barn’s plan consists of a large 7-bay field barn with midstreys located on either side of the central threshing bay.

The exterior features large gabled midstreys in the center of the east and west sides, with ventilation slits on either side. The east side has a small doorway on the right. Ventilation slits are also present in the gable ends. The south gable end includes a small loading doorway high in the wall, set within a cambered arch stone frame.

The interior midstrey doorways are defined by large dressed stone arches. The west midstrey has blocked arch openings in the side walls. The barn retains its 7-bay roof structure, featuring tie-beam and collar trusses. The two central trusses have lower collars instead of tie-beams. Collars are halved and bolted to the principals, with two tiers of tenoned purlins, a diagonal ridgepiece, long straight wind-braces and common-rafters all intact. The midstrey roof is also complete. Graffiti has been carved into the quoins of the cartways.
