Description

The barn south south west of Lyde Green Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a clay double-Roman tile roof with gabled ends. The barn has a four-bay layout, with an integral stable and a loft in the fifth bay at the east end.

On the exterior, there are cart entrances located off centre on both the north and south fronts, with ventilation slits positioned to the right and left. The north front includes a stable door to the left, with a loft doorway above it. There are some minor 20th-century additions on the north and south fronts.

Inside, the four-bay barn features tie-beam trusses with large chamfered tie-beams that have run-out stops, along with small collars that are mortice and tenoned to the principal rafters. It has two tiers of tenoned purlins, all of which are chamfered with run-out stops, and the common-rafter couples remain intact. The barn also has a stone flag threshing floor. The stables at the east end have a loft floor supported by a chamfered cross-beam, with a roof made up of purlins spanning the bay; however, the common-rafters have been replaced.

Overall, this barn is an essentially complete example of an early 18th-century stone barn and is part of a well-preserved farmstead group.
