Description
This barn, located about 70 metres northeast of Hamswell House, dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with some alterations in the 17th century and later. It is constructed from limestone rubble with stone dressings and quoins, topped with a double Roman tiled roof featuring raised coped verges and finials, along with stepped stonework beneath the verges. The barn has a rectangular plan.
On the west elevation, there are two 2-light windows with ovolo mullions and surrounds, a cornice, and leaded lights, likely added during the remodelling of Hamswell House. There are central steps leading to a door with a 4-centred arched head and chamfered surround, which features a 20th-century door. The north elevation includes two weathered buttresses and a rubble lean-to with a corrugated iron roof. The south elevation has a door in a chamfered stone surround and a glass lean-to. The east elevation features 20th-century garage doors and a loading door above in an ashlar surround.
Inside, the north wall retains remains of a raised cruck blade, and the walls are about one metre thick. The roof consists of four bays with tie-beams, collars, an upper collar, two rows of purlins, and a ridge purlin.
