Description

Toghill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, which was remodelled with a rear wing added in the 19th century and has undergone further alterations and additions in the 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with stone dressings, rendered surfaces, and slate roofs featuring raised coped verges and gable stacks. It likely originally had a through passage plan and presents a symmetrical front, with the rear wing forming an L-shape.

The farmhouse is 2½ storeys tall and has three windows, all of which are from the 20th century. The ground floor features two windows with hood moulds, and there is a central two-storey gabled porch that contains a fine inner door, which is studded with raised fillets and has a moulded and stopped frame with a glass insertion. The first floor of the porch has a 17th-century two-light casement window with a stone ovolo mullion and hood mould. Each of the two gables rises to the ridge height and includes a window and a finial.

On the left side of the building, there is a window at both the ground and first floors on the right, while the two-storey rear wing has a window at the ground floor on the left. The right side features an attached single-storey outhouse that is not rendered, with a door and a window on each side. At the rear, there is a single-storey sheltered area that is walled in along the back of the house and the inner side of the wing, containing two doors and two 20th-century windows. The first floor of the rear wing has a 19th-century two-light casement window under the eaves and a 20th-century window.

Inside, there is a 19th-century straight stair in the rear wing, with a landing that provides access to the front and rear of the house. The former external rear wall is notably thick. The rest of the interior has not been inspected.
