Description
Hamswell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th century and around 1930. It is constructed of rubble with rendered surfaces and stone dressings, topped with a concrete double Roman tiled roof featuring raised coped verges and kneelers, as well as stepped stonework under the verges and gable stacks. The porch on the left has a slate roof, while the rear lean-to is also covered with double Roman tiles. The building is laid out in an L-shape, comprising 2½ storeys and three windows across the front.
On the ground floor, there are two 2-light casements set in longer moulded architraves, though the lower parts are blocked, with three panes on each side. The central door consists of two panels with glass insertions. The first floor features 20-pane sash windows. The right side of the building has a 2-light cellar window with an ovolo mullion and recessed architrave, and a taller 2-light window with an ovolo mullion and floating cornice on the first floor. The left side includes a 4-pane attic window with a timber lintel. The rear of the house has an 18-pane boxed sash window on the ground floor to the left, a 20th-century window lighting the stair, and a single-storey lean-to. The two-storey rear wing has a boxed sash and a 20th-century window on the ground floor, with two 16-pane sashes on the first floor. At the rear of the wing, there is a single-storey lean-to with a light casement featuring ovolo mullions and a recessed architrave, along with two roof-lights.
Inside, the entrance hall features a curved open-string stair with a moulded newel post and a stone stair leading to the cellar. The front right room boasts a moulded marble fireplace with arched recesses on either side, a plain cornice, boxed beams, and window shutters. The rear kitchen includes a chamfered beam with step and scroll stops, a stone chamfered Tudor arched fireplace with a carved wooden overmantel, and a cupboard with L-shaped hinges and a carved panel above the left door. The first-floor room to the right has a raised ceiling level and a chamfered beam in the front left room. The main block has a 6-bay roof, while the rear wing has a 3-bay roof constructed in the 19th century, featuring a tie-beam, cambered collars, purlins, and an upper row of purlins set at angles, along with a ridge purlin and a screen dividing the roof space with a door made of three planks.
