Description
The former Dock Police Station and Custom Office is located at the southeast entrance to Millbay Docks in Plymouth. This building dates from the early to mid-19th century and is constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble and dressed limestone. It features a flat roof behind a parapet, which has a stepped cornice and square coping. The structure has an octagonal plan with a semicircular stair turret at the rear, topped with a domed roof. There is also a small single-storey extension on the left side, positioned between the tower and an old boundary wall.
The building stands three storeys tall, with one window on each side for each floor. The openings above the doorway and on the left and right sides are blind. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes, and the ground floor has keyed round arches that frame recessed panels, supported by rusticated ashlar piers that rise flush with a moulded mid-floor string. The round-arched windows and doorway feature a 20th-century door.
This structure is a notable example of its type, with its hexagonal plan allowing for an all-round view of the surrounding area.
