Description
Admiralty House is a house built around 1789 to 1793, located in Mount Wise, Devonport, Plymouth. It is constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble with limestone dressings, including arches and a first-floor sill string. The building features dry slate hipped roofs behind moulded stone parapets and has large ashlar end and rear stacks on the central block. The overall layout is L-shaped with a large double-depth plan, consisting of a three-storey central block and two-storey flanking wings, arranged symmetrically with a three-window layout on the front and a wing on the right. The windows decrease in size on the upper floors, with many original hornless sashes featuring glazing bars, while others are horned copies. The ground-floor windows of the central block are tripartite sashes set under blind round arches, while the other windows are positioned under shallow segmental arches. A central stone bowed porch includes a central doorway with casements on the sides, and there is a later wooden panelled lean-to porch in front. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. This house is part of a group of buildings that were detached from the naval base and provided accommodation for senior officers.
