Description
The landing steps from Mount Wise Ward in Plymouth are a double flight of steps leading to a pavilion and doorway through a defensive wall. They were built in 1820, with a keystone dated 1847. The structure features Plymouth limestone rubble with limestone dressings, and a wooden frame weatherboarded pavilion topped with a dry slate hipped roof. The two curved flights of steps ascend to a landing where the pavilion sits on a tall battered stone base, positioned in front of a wide doorway that is spanned by an elliptical arch through a battered rubble wall. There is also a straight flight of steps on the opposite side of the doorway, leading to Richmond Walk. This structure is part of a group of buildings that were detached from the naval base and provided accommodation for officers.
