Description
Hamoaze House is a large house located on a naval base in Devonport, Plymouth. Built in 1795 for the Duke of Richmond, it was later extended. The house features Plymouth limestone ashlar with mid-floor and sill strings, and has dry slate hipped roofs behind moulded stone parapets. There are ashlar stacks at the rear of the front wings and rendered end stacks on the central block. The building has a large double-depth plan, consisting of a three-storey-over-basement central block flanked by two-storey wings, along with various extensions at the rear.
The exterior is symmetrical with a 3:5:3-window arrangement, showcasing original and copy sashes with glazing bars set under flat arches, and shorter windows on the upper floors. A central enclosed stone porch features a moulded and dentilled entablature, a fanlight above a round-arched doorway with panelled doors, and round-arched side windows. An open cast-iron trellised verandah has been added to the porch, with two bays on either side and a glazed balcony under a hipped roof above the first floor. There is also a prominent side doorway facing George Street.
Inside, Hamoaze House retains many original features, including an open-well staircase with turned balusters on the lower flights and stick balusters on the upper flights. The property also includes original wrought-iron forecourt railings and is part of a fine group of buildings.
