Description
Mount Wise House is a house built between 1808 and 1810, located in Plymouth. It features a stucco exterior with stucco detailing and a dry slate hipped roof behind a stucco parapet with a moulded cornice. The building has a large square plan, consisting of two rooms at the front flanking a central entrance hall. It is three storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical six-window front, with the doorway positioned in the third bay from the left. The windows are original or copies of hornless sashes with glazing bars.
The stucco detailing includes channelled rustication on the ground floor, with an impost string above wide segmental arches that frame recessed windows. There are sill bands and moulded hoods on consoles at the first floor. A later addition is an open cast-iron and glazed port-cochere with ornate spandrels. The left-hand return features similar detailing and possibly represents the original front facing George Street. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. The house was originally built as accommodation for officers at the naval base.
