Description

Christiana is an early 19th-century corner building located on the corner of Hill Road and Copse Road in Clevedon. Originally a chemist’s shop established in 1837, the building has ashlar facing on its Hill Road elevation, which is painted, and roughcast facing on its Christiana, Copse Road elevation. It features a dentil cornice, a blocking course, and paired pilasters on the Hill Road front. The building has six windows with sash glazing bars. A particularly noteworthy feature is the complete, early 19th-century curved shop front on the corner, characterized by Ionic pilasters and a fascia with anthemion moulding. A six-panel door is located on the Copse Road side. The shop front is a rare and important survival in Clevedon. Christiana forms part of a group with Nos 36 and 38 Hill Road, and numbers 1 to 3 Christiana, Copse Road, and St Anthony’s School on Marine Hill.
