Description

OVER COMPTON ST 5816-5916 COMPTON PARK 14/95 Stables immediately east 31.7.61 of Compton House GV II Stable-Block round three sides of courtyard. Early C19. Dressed stone and ashlar walls. Slate roof with gable ends and stone gable-copings. Two ashlar stone stacks on north ridge and gable. One stone stack on gable of south range. Two storeys. Inner elevation: 4 bays, 6 bays, 4 bays. East range has the main elevation: central pair of bays are pedimented and contain 2 round-headed carriage entrances, with a central lunette in the tympanum. Matching bays either side, with a 2-light mullion-and-transom window each side with hollow-chamfered stone mullions and flat architraves. Iron casements and lead lights. 2-light mullion windows over, untransomed. Outer flanking doors have flat stone architraves, pulvinated frieze and cornice. North and south ranges have same architectural details, north range has two 3-centred doorways, right of centre, with 2-leaf plank doors. South range has similar details to north range. The rear elevations have stable-windows and loft doors. (RCHM, Dorset I, p 103(2)).
