Description
The stables immediately east of Compton House are a stable-block built around three sides of a courtyard in the early 19th century. They feature dressed stone and ashlar walls, with a slate roof that has gable ends and stone gable copings. The building has two storeys and includes two ashlar stone stacks on the north ridge and gable, as well as one stone stack on the gable of the south range.
The inner elevation consists of four bays, six bays, and four bays. The main elevation is on the east range, where a central pair of bays is pedimented and contains two round-headed carriage entrances, with a central lunette in the tympanum. There are matching bays on either side, each featuring a 2-light mullion-and-transom window with hollow-chamfered stone mullions and flat architraves. The windows have iron casements and lead lights, with untransomed 2-light mullion windows above. The outer flanking doors have flat stone architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice.
The north and south ranges share similar architectural details. The north range includes two 3-centred doorways, positioned right of centre, with 2-leaf plank doors. The south range has details similar to those of the north range. The rear elevations are equipped with stable windows and loft doors.
