Description

Chipman’s Lodge, located at the west entrance to Compton House, is a lodge dating to 1891, as indicated by the inscription “IRPG Anno Domini MDCCCLXXXXI” and a stone shield of arms. The lodge is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings, and has a clay-tile roof with stone gable-copings and moulded kneelers. A stone stack with panelling is situated on the left gable end. The lodge is two storeys high and features three windows. A canted bay window is located on the left at ground level, with two wide arches positioned to the right of this. The bay window has four lights facing forward, with an additional light on each side. First-floor windows comprise 4-, 3-, and 3-light openings, all with hollow-chamfered stone mullions featuring trefoil heads. Decorative leaded lights are present. The front doorway is set within the left-hand arch and is characterised by moulded stone jambs and a depressed-arch head, leading to a plank door.
