Description
The memorial drinking fountain and trough, dating from the early 20th century, is located on the east side of Market Cross in Sturminster Newton. It was cast by Mitchell and Sons in Bristol and is primarily made of cast iron, resting on a ceramic brick base. The fountain has four sides, with the lower stage featuring inscriptions on two sides and the outlet on another. The next stage is separated from the first by a moulding of bound reeding and includes four panels depicting a lion surrounded by rushes over a rose. Above this is a simple capital topped with a finial of two dolphins entwining a trident. The inscriptions commemorate two local doctors, father and son, J Comyus Leach MD JP and E Comyus Leach BA Surgeon.
