Description

The premises of P D and C J Mount, originally listed as the Bere Regis Bus Office, is a house that has been converted into a shop, office, and flats. It dates back to around 1500 and has undergone extensive alterations and additions in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building features a mix of roughcast, brick, and rubble with tiled roofs, some of which have stone slate verges. It has gabled and half-hipped roofs, along with several irregularly positioned brick stacks.

The original structure was an open hall with an east cross wing. The hall was later chambered, and a chimney was added in the 17th century, along with a west cross wing in the 18th century. Few early features remain visible on the exterior. Notably, at the south end of the east wing, there are remnants of a large chimney made of squared greensand, and to the north of this wing is a chimney likely from the 18th century.

The market cross facade is two storeys high. The ground floor includes double doors under a segmental arch to the left, a three-light 19th-century shop front, another door, and a fixed three-light window. Above, there is a three-light wooden casement with glazing bars. Inside, both the east wing and the central range feature cruck trusses with wind-braced purlins. The central range also has a ceiling with deep chamfered intersecting beams. The building is listed due to its plan form, remaining early features, and its relationship to other buildings, rather than for the details of its facade.
