Description
The National Westminster Bank is a bank building from the late 19th century located on the west side of Market Cross in Sturminster Newton. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof featuring a brick stack on the left. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a total of five bays.
On the ground floor, there are sash windows without glazing bars set under segmental arches that have keystones. These windows have plain surrounds and cills. The central entrance door is topped with a pediment that displays a coat of arms, supported by scrolled brackets extending from a Doric entablature held up by Doric columns. The door also features a large fanlight beneath a segmental arch with a keystone.
The first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars only around the margins and have plain surrounds with keystones. Wrought iron rails are present on the cills of these windows. The roof has three dormers, each with segmental pediments and 6-pane sashes set in moulded frames. The gables are shaped, adorned with stone copings and ball finials.
