Description
Two Churchill monuments are located immediately east of the chancel of West Compton Church. The first monument, dating from the late 18th century, features plain stone panels, bulbous corner blocks, and a moulded top block. It bears the inscription: "Here lieth ye Body of MARY, the Wife of Richd. CHURCHILL Esqr. of Mappercombe in this County, who died the 17th day of Decmr 1777 in the 69th year of her Age." The second monument, from the mid-18th century, is made of stone and has the same design as the first. It is dedicated to ANN CHURCHILL and includes an additional inscription for RICHARD CHURCHILL, who died in 1791.
