Description
The Church of St Laurence is a parish church built in 1842 by G. and H. Osborn. It features flint and rubble-stone walls that are rendered, and a slate roof with stone gable-copings and moulded kneelers. A stone bellcote is located on the west gable, topped with a steeply pitched roof and housing a bell. The church consists of a nave and chancel combined into one space, with a polygonal sanctuary. It is a single storey with three bays. The nave has right-angle buttresses at the corners, which include two pairs of set-offs and plinth moulding. Each bay contains one lancet window with labels featuring foliage stops and lozenge-leaded lights. The sanctuary has three stepped lancets with a label above, also adorned with foliage stops.
At the west end, there is a gabled porch with diagonal buttresses and a pointed-arch entrance, which has a label with carved stops. The entrance features a two-leaf plank and muntin door, and a two-light lancet window is positioned above the porch. A tympanum is built into the west wall, dating to around 1100, depicting two confronting wyverns with the inscriptions "MAHALD DE LEGELE" and "ALVI ME FECI".
Inside, the chancel arch is a pointed arch with responds and a hollow chamfer. The roof is constructed in the 19th century with queen-post construction and diagonal strutting. The piscina has an ogee trefoil head, with a 12th-century scallop capital reused as the piscina drain. The font is made of stone, featuring a circular bowl on a short round stem and square base, dating from the 13th century, and it is topped with a wooden cover that has a knop.
