Description
There are two adjacent chest tombs located about 15 meters south of the south porch of the Church of St Mary in Morchard Bishop. The northern chest tomb dates from around 1831 and serves as a memorial to Reverend John Comyns Churchill, who died in that year. It is made of Portland stone and white marble, featuring a rectangular shape with a moulded sill and a soffit-moulded flat lid. The sides have sunken panels of white marble with hollow chamfered surrounds. Reverend Churchill is commemorated on the south side under a flat-arched head to the panel, while other members of the Church family are remembered on the other sides.
The southern chest tomb dates from around 1770 and memorializes Peter Comyns, who died in that year. It is constructed from volcanic ashlar and grey basalt, also in a rectangular shape. This tomb has plain ashlar sides on a chamfered plinth and a simple soffit-moulded flat lid. The lid is inscribed and commemorates Peter Comyns, his wife Ann, who died in 1779, and other members of the Comyns family.
