WEYMOUTH

SY6878NW ESPLANADE 873-1/24/110 (West side) 14/06/74 No.20 Berolina Hotel, Clarence Buildings (terrace) (Formerly Listed as: ESPLANADE No.20 Clarence Buildings)

GV II

House in row, now hotel. Mid C19. Rendered, slate mansard roof. 3 storeys and attic, 1 window, all plain sashes. A hipped dormer above a full-height canted bay; slender pilasters to the mullions carried through as brackets in the entablatures, and at first and second floors the sashes are carried down to floor level, with full-width balconies on cast-iron brackets and with decorative balustrades, returned at the ends, and brought forward at the bay. To the left, on 2 steps, is a panelled door under plain fanlight, set in deep reveals, and with a moulded architrave with keystone and ears. The main moulded cornice is contained at the ends by modelled brackets below a plain blocking course, and the bay has a flat hipped roof. A stack to the right, and the ridge has alternate plain and decorative tiles. INTERIOR: the ceiling heights are noticeably greater than in No.21 (qv) to the right, and do not support the suggestion in the former list of an underlying earlier fabric.
