Description
The Berolina Hotel, located at No. 20 Clarence Buildings, is a mid-19th century house that has been converted into a hotel. The building features a rendered exterior and a slate mansard roof, rising three storeys with an attic and a single window, all of which are plain sashes. A hipped dormer sits above a full-height canted bay, which is adorned with slender pilasters that extend through the mullions and serve as brackets in the entablatures. The sashes on the first and second floors extend down to floor level, each with full-width balconies supported by cast-iron brackets and decorative balustrades that return at the ends and project forward at the bay.
To the left of the entrance, there are two steps leading up to a panelled door, which is topped by a plain fanlight and set within deep reveals. This door is framed by a moulded architrave featuring a keystone and ears. The main moulded cornice is supported at the ends by modelled brackets, below a plain blocking course, while the bay is capped with a flat hipped roof. A stack is positioned to the right, and the ridge of the roof is decorated with alternating plain and decorative tiles. Inside, the ceiling heights are noticeably greater than those in the adjacent No. 21, which counters the suggestion of an earlier underlying fabric.
