Description

No. 6 Belle Vue is a house in a row, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and later. The building is rendered, with some brickwork visible at the rear, and has a slate roof. It features a two-room plan where the central door originally led directly to the right-hand room, but now has a partition; the back of the house has been extended and modified.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has three windows. There are two 20th-century dormers with casement windows above a wide canted two-storey bay that contains 8:12:8-pane sash windows, adorned with a cornice and a fine fluted architrave. The first floor has a blind central light with a keystone, and to the right, there is a 12-pane sash window at each level, also featuring keystones. The central six-panel door has a vertical central bead, with a bead and reel design on the back, set within an Adamesque doorcase that includes urn decorations said to be made of pewter. The house has a small Portland stone plinth and a blocking course, but no parapet. To the right, there is a tall chimney stack made of Broadmayne brick. The rear roof slope has been raised and is at a lower pitch than the front, with 20th-century brick additions.

Inside, there is a dogleg stair located transversely behind the right-hand room, featuring a solid string, stick balusters, and a moulded handrail. The two main rooms have small moulded cornices, while the doors are simplified four-panel fielded types. The fireplaces date from the mid to late 19th century. On the top floor, flanking the staircase, there is a plank and muntin partition, likely from the 18th century. The house also has 20th-century roof lights over the stair and one back room. One first-floor fire surround features attractive Victorian glazed tile cheeks. This property appears to be older than most others in the street but underwent significant modifications in the 19th century.
