Description

Brenscombe Farm House is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th to early 17th century. It features rubble stone walls and a slate roof with deep eaves, which may originally have covered thatch. The building has brick end stacks, including one to the right of the door, which has arched recessed panels. The layout consists of three rooms and a cross-passage, and it probably started as an open hall type. The house is one storey with an attic, and the front wall is buttressed.

There is a 19th-century lean-to porch with a ledged door set in a pointed-arched stone opening, and a similar doorway is found at the rear of the cross-passage. The ground floor includes three casement windows with horizontal glazing bars, while the attic has three gabled dormers with casements that also feature glazing bars. A blocked window in the rear wall crosses the current first-floor line.

Inside, the hall contains a large open fireplace with stone jambs and a cambered timber lintel, along with a deep chamfered ceiling beam. The parlour, located at the right end, has a similar fireplace and an adjoining spiral staircase. To the left of the cross-passage, there are two service rooms, and the building has heavy roof trusses.
