Description

CORFE CASTLE STUDLAND ROAD ST 98 SE 3/135 Brenscombe (or Brinscombe) Farm House 20.11.59 - II Farmhouse. Probably C15 origin, altered in late C16 - early C17. Rubble stone walls. Slate roof with deep eaves - possibly covering thatch. Brick end stacks, and one right of door, with arched recessed panels. 3-room and cross-passage plan, probably, originally, an open hall type.One storey and attic. Front wall buttressed. C19 lean-to porch with ledged door, in stone pointed-arched opening; similar doorway at rear of cross-passage. Ground floor has 3 casements with horizontal glazing bars. Attic has 3 gabled dormers with casements with glazing bars. In rear wall a blocked window crosses the present first floor line. Internally, hall has large open fireplace with stone jambs and cambered timber lintol. Deep chamfered ceiling beam. Parlour, at right end, has similar fire- place with adjoining spiral stair. Left of the cross-passage, 2 service rooms. Heavy roof trusses. (RCHM, Monument 145. Dorset. Vol. II).
