Description
Renscombe Farm House, dating to the early 17th century, is a farmhouse with an attached outbuilding on its south side. It is situated in Worth Matravers. The house is constructed of rubble stone walls, some of which are plastered, and has a roof of stone slates. Brick stacks are set into the ridge of the roof. The building is one storey high with an attic, arranged as a long, narrow plan with three adjoining gabled projecting wings to the rear, creating a double-pile plan; these wings may be slightly later additions.
The main (east) front has a single-storey projecting wing towards the right end, which was formerly a dairy. The ground floor has three four-centred arched doorways (one appears to be a recent addition), two stone-mullioned windows with remnants of leaded glass, and three 20th-century metal windows. A small casement window is located under the eaves. The attic has four hipped dormers, two with stone-mullioned windows retaining remnants of leaded glass, and two with 20th-century metal casements.
An outbuilding is attached to the left end of the house. A lean-to projection extends from the left end of the outbuilding. It has two ledged doors on the ground floor, and a loft door is approached by a flight of stone steps.
Inside, the ground floor room at the right end features a large open fireplace with a four-centred stone arch and a bread oven. A large central stack has fireplaces that have been partially blocked up. There are several deeply chamfered ceiling beams. The roof was possibly originally cruck-framed. A small lancet window is located in the stair wing.
